Make sure to visit the dentist’s office twice a year. If you have regular cleanings and follow your dentist’s recommendations for proper tooth care, you will have healthier gums and teeth. Visiting the dentist’s office is one of the best natural ways to whiten your teeth and ensure that you have a beautiful smile for years to come.

TIP! Many new insurance plans will provide a reduction in costs if you regularly go through annual screening and maintain a healthy weight, BMI, and lifestyle. Look into your plan and compare to other plans to see if your premiums can be reduced through these methods.

There is no real evidence that teeth whitening products will harm a baby during pregnancy or nursing. You should play it safe and avoid taking any chances. There is no reason to risk your baby’s health just to have a whiter smile. Go to your dentist and have a good cleaning done.

Your dentist is a great person to tell you about what home whitening kits will work the best without causing damage to your teeth or your gums. There are some products that will work better than others and checking with your dentist is a great way to find the ones that work best.

Affordable Cosmetic Dentistry from Long Island Dentists

April 23rd, 2010

With so many Long Island Dentists being consulted for improving patient’s smile with cosmetic dentistry, the patient must first be clear on what procedures are available and what can be afforded.  As everyone knows, White, evenly shaped teeth enhance the beauty of your face.  Cosmetic dentistry offers many treatment options for people who want to improve their teeth. The methods can be as simple as teeth whitening or as complex as bracing and bridging but all must be discussed with your Long Island Dentist before any plans are made.

How do teeth whitening work?
Teeth whitening products uses materials consisting of peroxide to give the teeth a white and clean appearance. You can either visit the cosmetic dentist or use a home-based whitening system. Home-based systems use 20% peroxide but is a longer process, lasting for two weeks. Cosmetic dentists will start the process by removing all the cavities from the teeth and ensuring the gums are healthy. Then a dental system for protection of the gum is applied. Gels are then added on the teeth. At times, high intensity lights along with 35% peroxide can be used to start the whitening process. The light will oxidize the stains on the teeth, resulting in activation of peroxide. You will notice the stains fade after an hour, thus making your teeth appear lighter.

What is tooth-shaping?
Tooth-shaping is the most basic procedure and is an half an hour process. It reshapes the unwanted shape of the teeth. The cosmetic dentist can completely alter the shape of your teeth or the shape of the upper ones to match the lower ones. Even the removal of small amount of tooth enamel will not cause any damage in the long and short run.

What are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers, also called veneers, are porcelain slices that improve the appearance of the front of the teeth. They also cover any damage caused to the teeth. They have the same effects as dentures or artificial teeth. A cosmetic dentist would be able to provide the pros and cons of this treatment.

What is Resin?
Resins are kept on the teeth for a short time to improve their appearance. It is used to treat chips and cavities. The chips and cavities are filled with white fillings. The disadvantage is that these resins may lose their color after some time, thus losing their natural look.

What is Bonded-Bridge?
Bonded-bridge is a porcelain or resin tooth with metal or resin wings on both the sides. It fills the gap left by the missing tooth. The cosmetic dentist removes a small amount of enamel from teeth on both the sides of the hole and then the bonded-bridge is clipped on the teeth to fill the hole.

What is Gum-lift?
Gum-lifting, or gingivectomy, involves removing some part of the gums to even them out and make the teeth appear longer. It cures gummy smiles. A cosmetic dentist would be able complete the process in one or two sittings.

What are Braces?
Braces or orthodontics rectifies the gaps between the teeth, giving them an even appearance. It is a two-year process to help children and young adults. A cosmetic dentist would add the braces in one session.

Suffolk County Dentists & Smoking Effects

February 11th, 2010

When going to many Suffolk County dentists, the smoker is often afraid of what they are going to be told.  Smoking is considered one of the filthiest, least healthy habits a person can do.  Obvious to many Suffolk Dentists are discoloration but there is a far greater problem for smokers.  Besides the effect on the lungs, lips, and heart, teeth can also be dramatically affected and in some cases be killed by smoking.

The typical non-smoker finds cigarette smoke distasteful at best, disgusting at worst. There are also a number of side effects that smoking can have on the body which are damaging, particularly in the long-run. The fact that second-hand smoke does even more damage to non-smokers than it does to smokers does nothing to endear the habit to anyone. However, aside from the obvious respiratory and circulatory repercussions, there are other problems that are associated with smoking. Owing to the close proximity of the gums to the smoke caused by the habit, smokers now make up 50% of people with gum disease in the world.

Smoking has been known to slow the healing process of the body, particularly after surgical procedures. This is especially true for orthodontic and dental surgery, which delve into the areas that receive the most direct exposure to tobacco and nicotine. Damage on the gums was originally found to have been aggravated by smoking, accelerating the rate of decay of the gums and teeth. It was later found that it was possible to have no previous dental damage at all and still suffer from the side effects of smoking, because the smoke itself can cause cellular decay in the gums. Another, recently discovered problem is that the smoke slowly undoes any repairs done to the gums through surgery.

Aside from these issues, there are also a number of other problems that smoking can cause the a Suffolk County Dentists surgeon with their mouth, teeth, and gums. Plaque, for example, becomes significantly harder to clean off. It is unknown what exactly causes this to happen, but smokers tend to have plaque build-up in their mouths that can only be cleaned off by professional tools. This would not be a problem if a person regularly visits a dentist for teeth cleaning oral prophylaxis, a procedure that should be done every six months.  This runs the risk of letting the bacteria in the plaque slowly eat away at the teeth, with some cases seeking help for the problem too late.

There is also a pronounced risk of the bone and support structure of the teeth being eaten away. Smoking is known to slowly kill off the cells in the gums, as well as impede upon natural regeneration in that area. This can be dangerous if the gums and bones that support the teeth are already compromised by bacteria, tooth decay, or other damage. The fibers that hold the teeth in place recede when exposed to tobacco, loosening the teeth. This may be a slow process, but that only makes it such that most people simply fail to notice the problem until it is too late and the damage has already been done.

However, it isn’t just cigarette smoke that causes these problems. Even smoke-less products that are based on tobacco cause this damage, often in comparably similar degrees. According to several studies, both cigars and pipes cause the same cellular degeneration and damage rates as cigarette smoke. So far, all indications point to the problem being firmly rooted in the tobacco in the products and not necessarily the smoke itself.

Consult with your Suffolk County Dentists to find out all the problems and effects of smoking with your teeth.

Nassau County Dentists Alert Parents to Keep Up on Children’s Teeth

January 21st, 2010

When going to a Nassau County Dentist with children, parents are reminded of the responsibility they have with regards to their kids. Besides providing your children with an education, food, shelter, clothing and making sure that they remain safe, Nassau County parents should bring their children to a dentist.  With both parents usually working and busy days, parents may not be able to pay enough attention to protecting your child’s teeth. It is however an extremely important duty. Protecting your child’s teeth now will help them for the rest of their life and could save you thousands of dollars in future dental bills. Here are a few tips to help you maintain your child’s dental health.

Set Up Regular Nassau County Dentists Visits

The most important thing to do is to set up regular doctors visits. Once your child reaches the age of one, you should see to it that they visit the dentist every six months. By doing so, you will catch problems early before they become more painful and more expensive.

Establish Good Oral Hygiene

Establish good dental habits early with your child. Teach them to brush their teeth at least twice a day. Make sure that they also floss at least once per day. If you establish an oral hygiene routine early in life, chances are that they will stick with it forever.

Protect Their Teeth From Injury

You can not prevent every injury, accidents do happen. You can however prevent some injuries. If your children play sports, have them wear a mouth guard. Mouth Guards prevent thousands of oral injuries every year but could prevent thousands more. They should be worn in all physical sports, not just football or hockey. They can be injured just as easily in soccer, baseball, basketball and just about every other sports involving physical contact.

Stop Bad Habits

Thumb and pacifier sucking should be stopped as soon as possible. After the age of 2 pacifier sucking can have a great negative impact on how their teeth come in.

Establish A Healthy Diet

Limit how much sugar your child eats. Sodas and candy will eat away at your child’s teeth. Get them in the habit early of not overindulging in sugary snacks.

These are just a few simple things that you can do to assure that your child has good dental health when they visit their local Nassau County dentists. Your children may not want to do all of them but one day they will thank you for making them.

Long Island Dentists Ask How Clean Are Your Teeth?

January 8th, 2010

Many people going to Long Island Dentists want to know how clean are their teeth?  Using the rule of brushing after every meal poses issues for some people especially if they are going out to dinner or away for the day.

But thanks to advances over the basic toothbrush, getting your teeth to be clean is easier than ever.  Remember what things were like in the old days, when brushing your teeth was an exhausting ritual of getting a toothbrush and rubbing it back and forth in your mouth for a few minutes? Thankfully, the wonders of modern technology have solved this problem for us, with the invention of the electric toothbrush.

An electric toothbrush looks like a slightly bigger version of a normal toothbrush, but when you put in a battery and press a button, it vibrates for you. Despite the mockery they sometimes attract, however, electric toothbrushes do have a serious purpose: while they don’t really make it much easier to brush your teeth, they certainly do get your teeth a lot cleaner. The electric vibration is much faster than anything you could do by hand, vibrating tens of thousands of times per minute, meaning that dirt and bacteria are much more effectively dislodged from your teeth.

If you’re going to get an electric toothbrush, probably the best kind to get is one with a rechargeable battery. This way, instead of having to take out the batteries and put in new ones, you can just plug the toothbrush into a charger, the way you would with a laptop computer or a mobile phone – much more convenient.

However, one danger of electric toothbrushes is that people often don’t change them as often as they should. Just like with normal toothbrushes, the heads wear out. While electric toothbrushes obviously don’t require you to buy a whole new toothbrush every few months, you do need to keep buying new heads, otherwise the toothbrush’s effectiveness at cleaning may be dramatically reduced.

If you are already very good at cleaning your teeth, then spending the money on an electric toothbrush may not necessarily be worthwhile for you. If you have trouble getting everything off your teeth when you brush, however, or can never quite bring yourself to brush for as long as you should, then an electric toothbrush can make things much easier for you.

LI Dentists Help Baby Parents with Teething Pain for Children

January 3rd, 2010

Most LI Dentists hear of cases that baby’s that are teething cause parents heartache as well as the child.  Most dental professionals in Nassau and Suffolk county have children of their own and can relate to the parent who is struggling with teeth problems from young children.  Teething and the pain the comes with it is normal. Often, teething pain only causes slight discomfort in your baby which is not a reason for concern. However, if your baby becomes irritable, unable to eat, or restless at night  due to teething pain, it is time to provide some teething pain relief.

Here are some LI Dentists tips that can help you and your baby overcome teething pain for a happier child:

1. Provide your baby with chilled/freezer teething toys or food.

Chill child-grade and safe teething toys for your baby to chew on. The coolness of the toys can soothe your baby’s gums and make teething pain more bearable. Alternatively, you can also provide him with chilled or cold food like frozen bagels or ice pops. Aside from being edible, chilled foods also provide the necessary coolness to alleviate teething pain. Another option you might consider is letting your child chew on a chilled, clean, and lint-free washcloth. The coolness of the washcloth can provide relief from teething pain while absorbing your baby’s  excess drool.

2.  Massage your baby’s gums.

Teething pain is often triggered by the unequal pressure caused by the new tooth. To neutralize the imbalance, you can gently massage your baby’s gums with your finger.  Not only does the pressure brought by your finger relieves teething pain but it also improves blood circulation in the gums to ease the new tooth into coming out.

3. Use infant pain gels.

If you need to go out during the day, an infant pain gel is a convenient way to stop teething pain temporarily. Similar to a topical anesthesia, an infant pain gel numbs your baby’s gums for a period of time to block pain signals. Infant pain gels are also useful at night to ensure a good night’s sleep for you and your baby.

4. Raid your pantry for homemade  teething pain relief.

You may not know it but your cupboard and pantry can have the safest remedies for teething pain. Massaging a bit of clove oil on your baby’s gums can temporarily alleviate teething pain. Cloves and clove oils have numbing and warming properties that can effectively put teething pain in check. Another option is to let your baby chew or suck on natural licorice sticks. Instead of warming the gums like clove, licorice cools your baby’s mouth and gums while slightly mumbing it to soothe pain caused by teething.

5.  Administer infant pain relievers.

If your child experiences teething pain due to excessive soreness in the gums, you might want to consult a pediatrician. He or she can prescribed infant-grade pain relievers for your baby’s teething pain. Pay attention to instructions and stick to the precribed dosage when giving your baby infant pain relievers.

When your baby cries due to teething pain, remember to keep calm says your LI dentists. Your baby can sense if your agitated or tense and might follow the same route. Help your baby calm down by cooing and providing relief from teething pain. Talk to your baby’s doctor about other ways you can relieve your baby’s teething pain.

Long Island Dentists Help with Dental Health for Teeth

January 3rd, 2010

Many Long Island dentists stress to parents that developing children need a healthy approach to teeth care.  Parents are urged to bring children to their li dentists early so that they can check their teeth.  But in spite of such early awareness, many people fail to maintain good dental health through their adult life.  Good dental health comprises brushing and flossing your teeth every day, and regular visits to a dentist or dental hygienist as well. Besides, people supplement their dental care with the use of products like mouthwash or advanced mouth care systems. You should keep it in mind that the lack of adequate dental care practices will result in cavities and gum disease.

It is generally advised by Long Island dentists that you use a toothbrush with softer bristles so as to protect your gums. Some people, however, prefer power brush systems that help break up plaque and bacteria in your mouth. But it takes more than brushing to keep your teeth in good health. Some other steps need to be taken to ensure that people do not lose their teeth as they become old.

To begin with, you should understand your own oral health needs, as your oral health depends on your diet, the type and amount of saliva in your mouth, your overall health and your oral hygiene routine. Try to follow a daily routine in consultation with your dentist.  Flossing is also a huge part of any routine and should be incorporated after each meal.

As fluoride strengthens developing teeth in kids and prevents decay in adults, toothpastes and mouthwashes containing fluoride should be used. You should brush at least twice a day, if possible three times or after every meal. You should also floss at least twice a day. Brushing and flossing will remove plaque, a complex mass of bacteria that constantly forms on your teeth.

Limit the consumption of snacks and follow a balanced diet plan. Tobacco in any form will enhance the risk of oral cancer and cause stains on your teeth. Visit your local Long Island dentist regularly and get your mouth examined.
